During your first appointment I would like to sit and talk with you at length to learn as much as possible about your health concerns, your medical and personal history and address any questions you might have. It will be about 2 hours long, which includes a treatment. Subsequent visits are about an hour.
The primary objective of the first appointment is to assess the underlying conditions that have led to your current health conditions and see where things are out of balance.
I treat both the underlying cause of the condition and how it is showing up, to achieve long lasting results. Since you are a unique individual, your treatments are custom tailored to you. We will look at how your health is on all levels to put all of the puzzle pieces of what your imbalance is together.

Most people experience acupuncture as deeply relaxing and peaceful. Very fine filaments about the diameter of one or two human hairs are used, these are nothing like hypodermic needles used in western medicine. Many people do not even feel the filament , or they may sometimes have only a very slight twinge during insertion. These are shallowly placed in the skin, in “points” of energy that function to create harmony and balance in our body. When the filament contacts the energy or “chi” in the body, there is a unique sensation that ranges from a warmth to a flow. By and large patients describe that they feel very peaceful and comfortable.
Insurance companies are now recognizing the value of acupuncture and many are offering coverage for treatment. Benefits depend on your plan.
I am a participating provider with Bluecross/ Blueshield, United Healthcare, Cigna, Johns Hopkins EHP, and other major insurance companies.
I am happy to verify your insurance coverage for you. If you would like to call your insurance company to check on your coverage, the important questions to ask are:
- Is acupuncture is a covered benefit?
- What is your co-pay or co-insurance?
- Do you have a deductible. If so has it been met?
- Do you need a referral? Do you need an authorization?
- What number of visits they will cover?
- For what conditions is there coverage? Insurance will pay if acupuncture is used for medical conditions/pain. They do not provide coverage for “stress” or relaxation.
Frequency of treatment varies with each individual. We will work on a schedule of treatments together. The recommended number of times depends on many variables including why you are coming for treatment. Typically you will be seen in weekly one hour sessions if possible. Treatments build upon one another. During this time, significant signs of progress will likely appear. As patients experience improvement in their condition and enjoy a greater sense of ease in life, treatments will be spaced out further.
Typically pain conditions are better treated with 2 treatments a week initially. This is because treatment will bring down the pain scale. It is important to treat again before the pain scale goes back up. With continued treatment, the frequency of the visits will be adjusted and a maintenance schedule created. With the specialized training in pain management that I have received, most people receive a great reduction in their pain scale.
Clients who come to me with deep depression, severe anxiety, or crisis conditions, are also encouraged to begin with twice a week treatment to work on getting out of the downward spiral.
Factors to consider concerning the frequency of treatment are the severity of the condition, the length of time that the condition has been present, and your present level of health.
Everyone is different and we each respond in our own unique way. Most people feel benefit after the first treatment. It has taken us a long time sometimes to create imbalances in the body. It takes time to restore health. Fortunately, acupuncture works relatively quickly. There is no real way to predict how many treatments you will need. You do not have to be a believer in acupuncture for it to work.
YES! Acupuncture is a powerful preventative measure for maintaining health and keeping us in balance. Life happens! In ancient times acupuncture was recognized more than today for the maintenence of health. The shift seems to be because our society and thinking is more about fixing a problem after it has started rather than prevention. Many people come for treatments to prevent disease and to maximize wellness by using acupuncture to stay in balance. They experience more positive emotional responses to upsetting situations, have greater clarity, and many more positive benefits. You will feel much more peaceful and a lot less stressed.
A friend of mine’s grandmother of 93 years, had been receiving acupuncture for twenty years. She was fit physically as well as mentally, and took very few medicines. She attributes her health to receiving acupuncture.
Many patients come for regular treatments to achieve increased health and enjoyment in life. Acupuncture helps people to respond to life’s events with less upset and it deepens our interpersonal relationships. Our sleep is better, our outlook on life is more positive.
Things will begin to shift and change. You might start sleeping better and feeling more relaxed. Some of the comments people have said to me are, “Little things don’t bother me as much anymore,” ” I don’t feel as angry,” “My allergies are better,” “ My knee and back pain that I have had for 20 years disappeared.” The list of what clients have said goes on and on.
It is better to avoid caffeine and alcohol during the day of treatment. Also avoid very hot baths, and more intense workouts at the gym than usual before or after a treatment. To get the most from your treatment, people who can relax and let go during a treatment, seem to get more from their treatments. The treatment space is very calming and relaxing.
Most people seek treatment to find relief from a wide range of physical, emotional and mental conditions. Acupuncture treatments cultivate vitality and health. Acupuncture stimulates the tremendous healing power of the body.
It is not just a system of medicine that heals once we are in pain or have contracted a disease. Acupuncture is a true system of medicine that prevents disease, and fosters the body’s own wisdom to heal. Our definition of health in our western society is the absence of disease. A broader definition of health also includes how we feel in life, our mental outlook, a sense of positive well-being. Acupuncture enables us to cope with the demands and stressors of life. I help my clients to accomplish health on all levels.
Only pre-sterilized, disposable, single use, stainless steel filaments are used then disposed of in biohazard containers.
Many people comment on how they feel “lighter”. The place in their body where they “held” the issue, feels more open and expansive. People comment on how they feel more at peace or loving. They comment that they now have greater insight into the “lesson.”
According to many spiritual traditions, the last third of the night–between the hours of 3a.m. and 5 a.m. is the time that the “veils between the worlds are thinner”. The world is quieter and the presence of a higher energy is closer and easier to feel.
Setting aside time in the morning before work is wonderful for helping the day go easier and smoother. Evening is also a good time, and will help provide better sleep.
The most important thing is to make it a goal to set aside time everyday, whenever it may be..
When we close our eyes, we can turn our attention inward. Deeply going inside is the focus of meditation. In this particular form of meditation that I teach, it is about dropping into the heart energy center or “chakra.” This is the place that we can access our higher self and the heart is where a greater divine energy can be accessed and felt.
During the day with your eyes open, it is good to keep repeating the name of a Supreme being in your heart. This will help to bring more light in, and wash away old hurts and pains.
In the beginning, it takes time to learn to settle in. It may take 15 minutes or so just to get used to going inside and dropping into the heart. It is recommended to try to sit as long as is possible for you. Any amount of time is better than nothing. The longer you give to the practice, the deeper you will find yourself going and the quicker the results you will get from meditating.
It is more ideal to create a regular space in your home for your daily meditation. It is best if it is quiet and comfortable. Sitting erect is best. The area will start to build a peaceful energy. As you grow in meditation, you will find yourself at peace no matter where you are.
COULD YOU TELL ME A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE WORKSHOP YOU GIVE ON “VOICES?”
People generally follow a thought or idea in our mind without being aware of the source of the “voice”. There are 3 voices–the voice of self–our needs and wants, the voice that is not from our higher guidance, and the voice of “God.” Learning to discern between these voices is crucial.
